Monday Macro View: Who's Really Driving the Refrac Trend?
By Osama on August 17, 2026 in Market Sentiment
Refracturing has become one of the more closely watched trends in North American shale. As drilling inventory in mature basins tightens and operators face pressure to sustain production without the capital intensity of new completions, going back into an existing well and re-stimulating it offers a cheaper, faster path to incremental barrels. It also carries strategic weight for the oilfield services sector: refracs bring pumpers, chemical suppliers, and equipment providers back to wells they've already worked, often with different design requirements than the original job. Whether refracturing continues to grow, and where, has real implications for where OFS companies should be positioning crews, chemistry, and capital in 2026.
Using our Frac Chemistry Inspector, we classified 25 refracturing jobs nationwide so far in 2026. Of those, 21, roughly 84%, sit in the Western Gulf basin, concentrated almost entirely in South Texas counties like Live Oak, Karnes, and DeWitt. The Permian, by comparison, has produced only two refracs so far this year. Williston and Uinta-Piceance have logged one apiece.

Our Frac Chemistry Inspector is what makes an analysis like this possible. Built on top of public disclosure data, it automatically classifies every hydraulic fracturing job by type, whether it's an initial completion, a recompletion, a refrac, a workover, or an acid treatment, using volume thresholds, chemical signatures, and job timing. Every classification comes with a visible reasoning trail showing which criteria led to that call, so the output can be checked rather than taken at face value. It also layers in job sizing, treatment type identification, and full chemical mass breakdowns down to individual ingredients. For an industry where raw disclosures are inconsistent and time-consuming to interpret manually, it turns that data into something usable at scale.
Now back to the analysis. It is also notable is who's behind the activity. ConocoPhillips, operating through Burlington Resources, accounts for 12 of the 25 refracs recorded, nearly half of all re-stimulation jobs in the country, with wells clustered tightly in Live Oak and Karnes counties. Devon Energy follows with five refracs, mostly in DeWitt County, plus one outlier in Williston. BPX Operating has logged three, also in DeWitt. A handful of smaller operators, including Silver Hill Operating, Burnett, Hilcorp, and Uinta Wax Operating, round out the list, several running back-to-back jobs on the same well pad.

A handful of large operators appear to be running deliberate, multi-well refrac programs rather than treating re-stimulation as occasional well maintenance. ConocoPhillips' activity in particular looks like a systematic push across a specific set of counties, the kind of pattern that shows up when a company has identified a productive formula for extending well life in a known geology and is repeating it.

For OFS companies, the practical takeaway is about where to focus attention. If a chemical supplier or pressure pumper is watching for refrac demand, the Permian isn't where it's showing up yet in 2026. The Western Gulf is, and specifically the counties where ConocoPhillips and Devon already operate. Treatment types across these jobs also vary meaningfully, from hybrid to straight water frac designs, suggesting operators are still experimenting with the right chemistry for a second stimulation rather than converging on one standard approach. That's useful signal for suppliers thinking about which products to position ahead of the next round of activity.

It's worth watching whether this concentration holds or spreads as the year continues. If ConocoPhillips and Devon's programs prove successful, other operators in the Permian, Bakken, and elsewhere may follow with their own refrac campaigns, and the picture could look different by year-end. For now, our Frac Chemistry Inspector gives a precise read on where the activity actually is, letting companies act ahead of the curve rather than react to it once it's already obvious.
