Industry Drivers and Q1 Outlook: U.S. drilling and completion activity entered 2026 relatively stable, with oil prices holding firm and natural gas demand supported by LNG exports and rising domestic consumption. Near term, PTEN’s management expects some weather-related softness in Q1, particularly in completions, but sees limited downside beyond that.
Completion Services is expected to remain less seasonal than drilling, supported by high utilization of higher-quality fleets and continued customer demand for efficiency and automation. Longer term, PTEN continues to position for a gradual recovery into 2026, underpinned by disciplined E&P spending and structurally stronger gas-driven demand.
The Segment Results Analyzed

Quarter over quarter, Drilling Services revenues declined by 5% in Q4, reflecting lower operating days. However, cost reductions largely offset the revenue impact, and adjusted gross profit fell by less than 5%. Completion Services remained steady sequentially, with revenues broadly flat and adjusted gross profit. It was supported by high fleet utilization, minimal holiday downtime, and improved operating efficiency. Drilling Products revenues edged lower sequentially, driven by softer international sales, though U.S. revenue per rig remained near record levels, helping contain profitability declines.
Cash Flows and Dividend Hike: In FY2025, PTEN’s free cash flow declined by 25% year over year, driven by lower revenues, although disciplined capital spending partially offset the decline. Leverage deteriorated to 0.38x by year-end. Importantly, management raised the quarterly dividend by 25% to $0.10 per share and reiterated its commitment to return at least 50% of adjusted free cash flow to shareholders through dividends and buybacks, despite weaker full-year cash generation.
